Precious Baggage

“Men just don’t remember,”
I’ve oft heard people say,
“So focused on the here and now,
Their pasts just slip away.”

Well, herein lies a lesson –
Pray, take these words to heart:
A man remembers all he’s won,
And all with which he parts –

Each battle he’s engaged;
Foes outward; foes within;
Each conquest he has staged;
Each sacrifice; each sin –

All these minute burdens;
And more, much more, the cost
Of each love he still carries,
For love is never lost.
